This all Asian, English-speaking romantic comedy/drama with a classic story line rejuvinates the genre that has been used by everyone but Asians. (To my memory.) Based on a international bestseller (so I'm told) it shows the trauma of a "banana" (yellow on outside-white on inside) traveling from NYC with her richly rich boyfriend to a family wedding in Singapore.
I found this very fresh because of the writing, direction, and cast, of course. Here is a movie where Asians aren't involved in war, terror, or epic fistacuffs with each other. It's a different slant to the classic tale of reluctant girl friend meeting overarching moms and family.
I can see why this has done well and I hope we get more films like this one in the near future.
3.5 wonks for cheerful diversity and cast
0 wanks because there were no poliitical axes to grind
