Paula Maxa died everyday on stage at the Grand Guignol Theater during the 1930's. This film delves into the real Paula and her stage life as an original scream queen. The story reveals Paula as a somewhat forlorn person haunted by her childhood. It mixes this with mysterious murders around the theater's district and a killer intent of erasing Paula from the memories of her own past.
The breathy Anna Mouglalis plays a time-worn Paula in this period piece noir. She is surrounded by mostly unsympathetic characters who want to push her performances further and further to the limits of gore and shock even if it kills her. Only a young reporter working on the murder stories offers any form of redemption. Will Paula survive and live happily ever after?
3 wonks for period piece atmosphere and a moody Mouglalis
2 wanks for not having much outside of Mouglalis character
