Following the forum trend for b&w I found this jewel on NF. Orson Welles starred and directed this one with Eddie Robinson and Loretta Young. Seems it is 1946 and Robinson arranges for the escape of a lower level Nazi officer in hopes he will be lead to a much bigger fish: Franz Kindler, mastermind of the Holocaust.
They story takes us to Harper, Conn. where Kindler is Prof. Charles Rankin. He soon meets the Nazi officer and murders him to cover tracks. Young is beautiful and totally in love with Rankin. She defends him out of the blindness of love. Robinson soon discerns who Rankin really is and investigates to verify his identity.
Eddie Robinson got an Oscar nom for his work. He was terrific playing the low-key war crimes investigator.
4 wonks for acting and post war plot
1 wank for ancient film making and dialog.
Worth a see.
