Look,I can see where a guy drawing a pay check as a critic might have trouble with this work.
I went to see Tom Hardy. I wasn't disappointed, he was very interesting in the role. As a matter of fact, I got a lot more than I expected, i had a great time watching a well made movie. Maybe I'm just a sucker for sci fi.
I use a rough rule of thumb about expectations, and my ticket purchasing decisions, knowing that the best big budget movies get the best dates .
So, i almost didn't go. I wasn't very thrilled as I considered to go and see the thing , that it got some bad reviews, plus it was a comic book movie. Then I heard one good review, focused on Hardy, and,- after all, if was sci fi, with one of the best actors working today, so I went.
It was a super entertaining show. I must immediately qualify that ,because a great part of my enjoyment came from the excellent projection and sound.
This is a very pretty movie, with a lot of visual and sonic impact. The camera man on this movie is so strong, he is competing against himself, he is also the camera man on a star is born. In a lesser theatre, the story would suffer. This was designed as a big screen, big crowd, blockbuster. Some avant garde plot decisions were made the critics faulted, I don't think it detracted from story . The movie even has a mad scientist, a traditional plus. The critics faulted him .
The movie was entertainingly funny but not a comedy , one has to be willing to meet them halfway on some of the humor. That worked for me, but don't know if the effect is designed to be so subtle. The critics were't laughing. It is more of an adventure , fish out of water combo.
Speaking of critics, when I buy a ticket to a movie made from a comic book, and that comic book is about one mans personal struggle against invaders from outer space I know better than to ask too much of the kitchen.
I saw a big star in a hollywood full budget project. I don't think the obvious flaws detracted one bit from the story or my enjoyment. I don't need that kind of detail in an invaders from outer space movie, I suspend ton of belief when I walk into the theatre. Plus I'm running a senior discount, which effect outlook and the cost benefit ratio.
