Based on Basque folklore, Paxti made a deal with a demon to survive the war and reunite with his wife. Typically, the demon tricked him and Paxti found his unfaithful wife with another and a bastard daughter to boot. When the demon comes to collect Paxti's soul, he fights the demon and wins! He locks the demon in a cage until a village girl happens upon it and is tricked into letting the demon out. Much commotion ensues with the appearance of a government investigator who enlists townfolk to break open Paxti's fortified home where they believe is much hidden gold to be looted.
The action even takes us down to hell as Paxti tries to assert his will over the evil that tricked him.
This is a well told tale with lots of characters, demons, and stylized direction. It has an almost fairy tale look with sly humor interlaced. Not to be viewed critically, it is certainly entertaining.
3 wonks for Paxti and his demon and their well told tale
1 wank for subtitles and less than grownup values
