'Overlord': Nazi horror and inclusionary casting . . .

We open on C47 heading over the channel for a preinvasion mission that will help our pilots in their bombing attacks the next day. Pvt Boyce is our protagonist and their platoon leader is Sgt Rensin. The rest of the stereotypical platoon are white guys from various walks of life. (They were all wearing 101st Airborne unit patches but the 101st was not integrated during WW2. There were all-black paratroopers and combat troops delegated to the same units: Tuskegee Airmen, eg.) Just before they reach their jump point all hell breaks loose in a horrific cacophony of explosions as flak and bullets fly through the plane. Engines afire and the pitching about will invoke your PTSD.

Finally, they jump as quickly as they can and that is harrowing as well. It's almost like the beginning of "Pvt Ryan". After hiding from patrolling Wehrmacht, they capture a redhaired French beauty who takes the six surviving guys to her attic. It is here that the stereotypical GI characters burst forth. A redneck, a not-so-brave guy, a Jew, a Jersey wiseguy, and Boyce.

The mission is held back by patrolling soldiers and an amorous visit from the local German commander. Pretty much the "dirty Nazi". Boyce wants to protect the hottie since they have been shooting eyes at each other in every scene. Soon Chloe tells them of the horrifying things that go on in the church basement. Of course, their mission is to blow the jammer on top of the church steeple.

We then downmix into the world of mad Nazi scientists creating thousand-year soldiers. Let the gunfire and horrors ensue.

No, not a really serious movie but more of a popcorn thrill ride. Entertaining (as much as a war movie can be) with thrills and chills for those who bore easily. If you want your fillings shaken loose then see this in Dolby Atmos otherwise just wait for cable.

3 wonks for great production values and character development
2 wanks for stereotypical characters and story
