I just watched this 2015 British film on Netflix. Directed by Ben Wheatley. It's about a luxury apartment high-rise set in 1970's London. The high-rise is self contained, so the residents start to lose interest in the outside world. Soon the people on the lower floors become resentful of the people on the upper floors, and the people on the upper floors become disdainful of the people on the lower floors. This is a movie about the breakdown of social cohesion. It's a disturbing movie.
And a couple of things caught my attention. Near the end the rich people start making plans to replace the poorer people on the lower floors. "Replace them, colonize them." Not two weeks ago in the NY Times a columnist called Michelle Goldberg wrote a column entitled, "We Can Replace Them." It's there to be Googled. In it she suggests that the good, wonderful people of Georgia can be replaced with people who are more to her liking. "Replace them, colonize them."
The other thing that caught my notice is by the end of the movie all the small children of the poorer people are living in the penthouse with the richest of the adults. I think there is a message here too.
Don't watch this movie on a lark. Be prepared, after 20 minutes there is something almost psychologically horrible in every scene.
And don't feel bad if you have to turn on the subtitles.
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
