Stainless crowns were, unfortunately, quite common, with gold being an upscale option.
Also, gold front teeth were popular among the career criminals. They would put it in for no other reason than just appearance.
While that practice was fairly limited in the more Westernized parts of the country, in Asian republics it was common to have ALL front teeth covered in gold - a symbol of their wearer's wealth and status.
Considering the film was made in 2008, not in 1965, and the people shown there are respected rocket engineers and scientists, this was shocking.
The only possible explanation is the geographical location of their plant - deep inside the Mother Russia... life changes very slowly there. You would not see that in places like Moscow or St. Petersburg.
