It can be tedious to watch just two actors on the same set for ninety minutes. Polanski thought he could pull it off and he almost does. Using his wife (Seigner) and Mathieu Almaric he makes them human tennis rackets by having them volley to each other.
Thomas has adapted the book 'Venus In Fur' which is about the recognition of S&M. He is frustrated by not being able to find a suitable actress. When he is about to leave the theater Vanda shows up disheveled and flighty. She insists he let her read but he protests there are no actors present. Eventually, he submits and from the first few lines, he becomes totally taken by Vanda. They continue reading and the script becomes a strange reality.
We are left pondering who Vanda really is: Venus, a goddess, a demon? She takes complete control of the theater and Thomas. Entertaining in a thoughtful way but like some Polanski films, it has a weak ending.
