We watched last night the 1937 original with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. It is available as DVD from Netflix.
The story starts and develops in the rather corny way, but it has surprisingly good ending. One would be best advised to suspend his disbelieves and try to imagine himself living in 1937. We tend to look at those times as an almost antiquity, so the movie allows us to do one point calibration - the American movie industry was flourishing, rich and vibrant organism back them.
In fact some of the Hollywood's best films were produced during that era - who would forget the true masterpieces like Ninotchka? :)
