No, I was not prepared for the assault on the male movie-going demographic. The previews don't prepare you for a non-stop course in Lesbionics 101 or advanced abortion studies. We have a very powerful Lilly Tomlin dragging her fearful granddaughter around to drum up the $600 she needs for a 4:45pm abortion appointment at the local clinic. Tomlin, in the course of the movie, kicks her granddaughter's impregnator's ass, breaks up with her much younger lover of four months, tries to cajole money from a first spouse, and cower to the overpowering mother of the girl.
This was a Tomlin showcase. She got to be "herself" and to lead the cause for women's rights at the same time. The entire cast was very good and there were laughs and sometimes a tear.
The ultimate question comes down to: Will they raise the money, will they get to the clinic on time. Tomlin's '56 Chrysler Coupe doesn't help.
With all things PC racking up big points in Tinsel Town I would be shocked if Tomlin doesn't get a nomination this year. Her performance was that good...not silly but really good. And the subject matter, well it will light up the Academy's heart.
