Maybe not "historical" but imagined.
This first season is filled with the struggles of the new 28 year old King of Frawnce essentially fleeing the unfriendly nobility clustered in Paris. He finds comfort in his father's "old hunting lodge" at Versailles. He decides to make it the new home of France and begins elaborate plans for additions, extensions, and landscaping never before seen.
Louis' new home is filled with beautiful women, a gay brother, a Spanish wife, a German mistress (sister-in-law), and plotting nobles. It is a somewhat compelling and entertaining look at the imagined world of courtesans, servants, and officials. Romance, debauchery, butchery, and intrigue are all present.
This is a France-Quebec production that is very nice but not up to Brit standards for period drama. Plus, it has an unusual soundtrack.
If you time is valuable, look elsewhere otherwise you will be hooked into ten episodes of flourish and flesh.
