Back in the day they would include a few episodes that were peripheral to the main story line arc. Episode 3 would be one of those.
Even if off-arc, the episode did qualify as an X-file. Monster content. However a monster with a twist. A large horned lizard that transforms into a human. Rather than a human that transforms into a monster. Opposite of a were-wolf. And who is to say which is the greater monster, the lizard or the human. Certainly humans are more dangerous....as is finally revealed by episode's end.
I enjoyed the episode. The atmosphere seemed like out of a David Lynch production. The wierd motel with the peeping tom owner. And one of the trophy heads in a motel room was a jackalope. Weird and trippy.
Scully having that sex scene with the lizard when he was in monster form (human). Which was, of course, a reverie within the mind of the monster and didn't really happen. Quite a turnabout for the Scully character. It did look like Gillian Anderson did throw herself into that skit with gusto.
