Tens of thousands, I believe, going back to 1917 or so.
For those who don't know, Ataman is an elected position, elected at the Rada.
Anyway, there is plenty of controversy about them and their role in the 20th century history, I am not a part of it, I just have fun meeting and talking to the Ataman. He is a very colorful individual.
