Another late-to-the-party review, just seen on pay and view.

I have to say up front that this is not a feel good film. Its a good one, but I came away feeing sorry for everyone involved. This is a war story after all. Pitt and Cotillard are outstanding actors; each in the role of WW2 undercover operatives paired up against Nazi operations in Morocco. Set up as a married couple, they do really fall for each other, move to London and marry for real. They have a daughter.

Information surfaces that Cotillard may actually be a German counter spy, so a test is set up to determine that fact.

More than anything, this film pulls at the heart when viewers are shown how people get used by war and governments, regardless of how much they fight against it. Anyone who has done military time has had the standard espionage briefings about how "turning" can happen and how easily the leverage can be done.

I'm both glad and sorry I saw this, but in a way, isn't that a mark for a really good film? Pitt is a great actor, imo, but I've never seen him do better than this. The wartime period sets are terrific. You'll think about this one for a bit.
