Hi Des- Thanks for your post. It got me thinking...Funny- after watching 'The Villainess' (twice) we watched 'The Heiress' with Olivia De Havilland and Montgomery Clift. It's a masterpiece. It felt reassuring to watch such great classic film that literally could have been performed in our living room.
That said, because Hollywood seems incapable of presenting any drama on the level of 'The Heiress' or 'Rear Window' etc. - I seem to be leaning towards what current cinema is doing best - video game/Anime inspired films like John Wick and the Villainess. I appreciate the editing craftsmanship, the action, the choreography, the almost campy violence and by necessity, I totally suspend my belief.I appreciated 'Hell or High Water' - but I can't say it was an *improvement* over 'No Country for Old Men', or 'In the Heat of the Night' - but 'Mad Max -Fury Road' in 3D was an advancement in cinema techniques.
Sure - 'The Villainess' and 'John Wick' are ridiculous "...driving the car spread-eagled...", but I think that's okay because these video game/Anime inspired films exemplify where cinema is evolving- and the bar seems to be getting higher. I like 'em.
Have a great day!
