My take on the Oscar telecast

A few good things but not a good show.

It was way too long. Bring back the three hour show.

Get a different host. I'm sick of Whoopi and her most unfunny attempts at being entertaining. Why not get a new face if Billy won't do it?

Limit the speeches to 3 minutes, tops. Didn't Robert Redford go on for an awfully long time? Let's have the winners give their meandering thank yous in the press room.

I love Paul McCartney's music but "Vanilla Sky" is even more mediocre than the film it came from. Thankfully it didn't win. I did think Randy Newman was a good choice, even though his song wasn't his best. My fav was the Enya tune.

Why no significant nominations for HARRY POTTER? I don't think it was good enough to be nominated for best pic but Robbie Coltrane should have been a nominee as best supporting actor. He was great. The best part of the film, IMHO.

Well, all things weren't bad. At least we didn't have to listen to Bjork trying to sing or discover that Geena Davis doesn't wear undies.

And many of the gowns were awful. Didn't Cameren Diaz look in the morror before she wore that whatever? I'm a guy who appreciates a fine woman in nice clothes but some of the designer's must be trying to test the gag reflexes of the viewing public.

I guess that's why people wear atrocious or shocking clothing. Few things say "LOOK AT ME!" better than ugly clothes.

And I don't know if Halle Berry is the best actress, although she is more than adequate. I do think that Judi Dench or Maggi Smith and Cissy Spacek were all splendid in their roles. But Ms. Berry is certainly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen - of any color. And her speech, while much too long, did not offend me.

Finally, Sidney Poitier. I ask you, isn't he a class act? It's about time The Academy recognised what movie goers have known all along - that Mr. Poitier is a splendid actor and a great gentleman. His acceptance speech was articulate, humble, and most gracious. Bravo!

Denzel? A fine actor. Training Day not one of his best. Maybe his Oscar was amends for his being overlooked for Hurricane and Devil With A Blue Dress.

I don't think I'll watch next year. Of course, I've been saying that for 30 years and I keep tuning in.
