There currently is no standard for digital video (there are a couple in the works, but they don't look anything like coax). You would likely have a digital audio input, but this will have an RCA (or toslink) connector (RCA cable is technically coax, but its not the same as standard video coax). If there is an actual coax screw terminal on the back of the pre-amp then it is most likely standard video (however I highly doubt that is the case). All the A/V recievers I've seen have composite video only(some of the high end ones will have S-VHS and the even more expensive ones will have component).

As others have said your main options are to get a cable box with composite out (or even better S-VHS), or connect the coax to a VCR and use the coposite out of that (however then you will then have to use the tuner in the VCR to watch TV, meaning you would have to watch whatever you were recording).
