The problem is on one line only?

I'm assuming that when you only had one set hooked up the signal was
adequate.

If, after the splitter was added, both lines were poor then it would probably be a signal strength problem.

If only one run is bad, it usually points to a poor connection somewhere on that run. I'd look for a poorly connected "F" connector there.
