For you to get a picture your TV must be able to handle PAL as well as NTSC. Otherwise you will only get rubbish, be it composite or S video. Most TV sets here handle both systems but I gather this is not always the case in the USA.Also, be aware that some players which claim to handle both PAL & NTSC do a crude conversion to yield a very so so picture. However this does not apply to TV sets. If they claim to handle both (and often throw the Secam French system in for good measure) then they do it properly.
So, the composite output is a red herring. The problem is PAL & NTSC compatability. Both systems handle component, s video & composite BUT the resultant signal is either PAL or NTSC.
