Video Distribution - fish out of water....

I'm about to take advantage of all that home run coax I ran when building my house... I want to be able to distribute video through out the house from all the sources in my Basement home theater system - 2 sat rcvrs, vcr, etc. it looks like the device to use is a channel modulator, takes any video source and up converts to to a UHF or Cable channel... Anybody out there have experience with these? They run several hundred buck and some seam to pass dolby stereo - others do not.
I feel like a fish out of water in this field.
