Are you hooking it up to an AVR or a TV set. And where does the VCR get connected. If you have a AVR that is usually to connect all the sources to that and the AVR to the TV.

Don't forget that there are three video formats: Composit, S-Video and Component. With the exception of a couple of expensive Kenwood AVRs you cannot convert between these. You neede to use the same mode from the source consisently all the way to the TV and any component in between.

Actually there is a way to cheaply and easily convert composit to S-Video but not to Component. But first be sure this is not where the problem lies.
