Home Video Asylum

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

TDK or Maxell are both tops but ....

... there can be variations in batches and in the various categories within those brands. I have some older Maxells which should have disintegrated by now but give pics as good as EHG (Extra High Grade) TDK. I also have some "TV" TDK which is tops but a batch of HS TDK which is ordinary. The biggest recent disappointing purchase was SONY - very ordinary and not cheap.

So yes, there are differences. My latest purchase was EHG TDK and, using an S-VHS machine (not s-video recording) get results only marginally inferior to the original broadcast and better than quite a few direct broadcasts where video quality (off satellite) shows up the large variations in the quality of the original broadcast tape. Note we are projecting on to a 112 inch wide screen so quality variations are magnified.
