The main decision making factor between the two is your control of light in the room. If you can darken the room for viewing (blackout drapes, shutters, etc...), definitely go with the 9" projector. Then you can go 100"+ on a screen.

If light cannot be controlled, rear projection is the way to go. The largest widescreen rear projection sets are 65".

I am a newbie on ebay so I don't have any advice for you in that regard. I found a demo Sony VW10HT LCD projector at a local home theater store for a great price with a 5 year warranty. Trying before buying is smart when it comes to projectors.
