When turned on (or plugged in) there is a glowing light on the sub. It was hooked up previously to a ProLogic system via the speaker-level connections, so the line level has never been tried. I gave her several suggestions, including trying different settings on the sub's own crossover, volume, and also the receivers various menu-driven speaker and sub settings.
I agree w/ Estes that giving advice remotely to a non-audio person is difficult. Don't knock yourselves out on this one...just seeing if there's an obvious fix (or flaw in the receiver) I was not aware of. thanks.
