RGB / Y Pb Pr question

47.234.0.52

Please keep in mind I'm a newbie to video, but can anyone explain to me the difference beween the Component video connections RGB and Y Pb Pr ? I'm not so much looking for the technical specifications of these signals, but more along the lines of "what does it mean to me when inner-connecting components in a home theater system". If it's necessary to explain the technical specifications of these signals in order to better understand, that's fine too.

I've researched a couple of home theater systems that incude:

1. Surround sound systems.
2. HD "ready" monitors
3. HD receivers.
4. DVD player

In relation to all of these components:

1. Some have RGB component outputs, while some have Y Pr Pb conponent inputs.

2. Some RGB inputs have a seperate horizontal and vertical sync connections.

3. Some component outputs are switchable between Y Pb Pr and RGB.

4. One component may not have seperate horizontal and vertical sync outputs while the component that I would be connecting to does have seperate horizontal and vertical sync inputs.

My bottomline questions would be: Are all of these component video types compatible ? Can I plug a Y Pb Pr output into a RGB input etc. ?

Thanks for anyone that can help with this.

DJ
