some processors are pre/pros (which are multichannel preamps and a dolby processor in one chassis). on those units you can of course change the volume. i think I have seem processors that are just processors (no volume attenuation), but I can't recall any off hand. klipsch sells a rebadged 5.1 pre/pro for like $169. If you're looking for something inexpensive. most pros and pre/pros are generally over $1k, IIRC.
