Do HDTV reciever and connection methods vary in quality?

Cox may start carrying HDTV in a couple of weeks but I will need to buy a tuner. For picture or digital audio output (to my D/A) signals, does this quality vary much among the models? Is a Samsung which seems to be the cheapest as good as others?

Also, my Pioneer Elite HDTV monitor can accept the component type of D-sub connections. Which is better?
Thanks.
