proly because the DVD's DD multi-channel signal is constant and therefore does not cause the receiver to re-sync itself where as the DD signal from DSS is not.... Yes, it's optical, but that does not mean that the signal is always DD or DD multichannel..... This might explain why my Sony receiver takes about 5 seconds to switch from mode to mode.... it is proly to minimize the type of problem you are experiencing... it waits longer before it decides that it's a request to switch formats....Also, i've noticed that the DSS signal is not always the same within the same broadcast and i believe it's this way to save band-width....
