I've just been down this road for a 37" wide Philips 34" widescreen direct view.I don't know if you're looking for a nice looking piece of furniture or just something inexpensive and utilitarian. I was looking for a quality piece (real wood, classic styling) that would blend with my furniture (mostly antiques and traditional stuff).
Most of the better furniture stores in my area had different types of armoirs and units. Almost all the armoirs that are computer cupboards also some as entertainment centers, and those are generally 39"-42" wide inside. If the cabinet is the type where the doors slide in along the sides, be sure to measure usable interior width with door slid back. I found several that were wide enough for my Philips.
Furniture companies make cabinets in a variety of widths and heights...if you don't see what you want on the floor, it doesn't mean they don't have a wider unit in their line - ask to see a catalog or brochure. I found several options from manufactureres like Hooker, Riverside, Sauder and others. (Sauder stuff was a little too downscale for me but the other two had scads of selections.) Most major furniture groups that do office and residential also make TV cabinets of some sort. The cheap and contemporary styled stuff at BB and CC just didn't ring my chimes. I especially disliked the silver cabinet that matched my phillips. If your taste runs more to contemporary styling, you may have more to look at.
I also looked at some AV lines like Salamander, but they turned out to be quite expensive IMO, and non antique-friendly to boot.
I ended up going with a cherry cabinet base from Riverside, and will add two narrow shelf units on either side at Christmas. I also liked a Hooker walnut armoir but would've had to wait 30 days - not an option since the Philips is being delivered on Thursday.
These things are out there - grab your tape measure and check it out.
