What are you going to be watching on it? Cable? DVD? Satellite? Hi-def?The Pioneer Elites are the best RPTVs I've seen. But there are also good bang for the buck sets from Mitsubishi, Philips, Hitachi, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Sony. One thing I would absolutely do if I bouight a RPTV is budget for a professional calibration by an ISF technician. Well worth the $$$.

You might also pick up The Perfect Vision or Stereophile Guide to Home Theater at the bookstore.
Keep in mind that most RPTVs are poorly set up at your local electronics emporium. Be prepared to tweak sets a bit in-store to evaluate them. Also, be aware that hi def programming and digital animation, which are the typical signals you'll see these sets being fed, look good on most any display. These feeds won't tell you much about a particular display's performance. Hook any candidate up to a progressive DVD player and try a live action film through it.
CRT RPs are the best bang for buck. DLP (Samsung) and LCD (Panasonic, Sony Grand Wega) are starting to make inroads.
Good luck.
