I know little about projectors, but know something about fans. I imagine projectors use 12volt fans, identical to those found in computers. If you’re handy, and want to save some dough, you can opt to replace the fan yourself. (I have no idea how your existing fan is connected to the power source, so the replacement may involve soldering. Look to see what it would take.)You'll have to look at the existing fan to see what the voltage requirement is, airflow (CFM), decibels produced, and its size. Punch the fan's model number into google and you should find the specs. I've done this numerous times with success. Included in the spec sheet for the old fan, should be the decibels (noise) it produces. Your job would then be to find a fan that will work, and produce fewer decibels. Remember, a 3-decibel drop will reduce the noise level in half.
Of the brands available, Pabst fans are the best, but difficult to find and more expensive, about 25% more than comparable fans. I would also recommend Vantec "Stealth" or Panaflow (Panasonic) fans. Often times, manufacturers reduce the fan speed to reduce the decibels, but that also reduced airflow. You’ll have to remain focused on the bottom line:
1) Voltage requirements
2) Unit size
3) Decibels produced
4) AirflowI added a couple links. The Listening Room has sonic signatures of fans, and allows you to download an MP3 of the fan running. I find that helpful. Once, I bought a fan that had all the makings of a great performer (Vantec Stealth 120mm), and the damn thing had a slight whine to it that eat at my nerves.
http://www.plycon.com These guys sell Pabst fans. They are listed by size under cooling equipment.
http://www.directron.com/casefans.html Good source for fans.
http://www.resellerratings.com/find.pl This site doesn’t sell anything, as far as I know. I use them to see how a vendor rates with past customers. IMO, an invaluable resource whenever I consider buying off the web. Take Best Buy, big name store; I would expect to have good customer service. Out of 232 customers, they only score a 3.63 out of 10.0. Pretty crappy if you ask my opinion. Last time I checked, the three resellers I mentioned rated very well.
Good luck. Hope this helps.
