Invariably use surround, even ....

.... if it is an older recording with only stereo sound, but the DSP mode chosen in such cases is not agressive and only adds subtle extra sound to the side and rear channels. If the processing is done well this adds heaps to the atmosphere but if done poorly can sound really weird so I appreciate why many avoid it.
