Basic Surround Sound question

Hi. I'm slowing figuring out the wiring on my surround sound system and I have a question. In order to get surround sound from my cable box, is it necessary to have the digital audio coaxial cable hooked up from the box to the receiver? As it is now, I have the audio left and right rca's connected from the box to the receiver and I don't seem to get anything from the rear speakers. Am I missing something or is that the way it's supposed to be? The receiver only has one digital audio coax jack so I'm using it w/ my DVD. I'd simply unhook it and try it but the cable is too short to reach from my cable box to the receiver so I figured I'd ask here to save myself the trouble of physically rearranging everything.
Thanks
Greg
