I am in a similar situation. I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX receiver, which is now used as a pre/pro and power source for the rear channels. Although it lacks many features on newer pre/pros, ergonomically, it is terrific. Level adjustments on the fly, subwoofer output in Direct mode, retains settings for each input, etc., are all features many lower priced pre/pros omit. I was looking at the Outlaw, the Rotel and a few others. Each one is missing features which would make the transition awkward for me.I have decided to focus on upgrading other parts of my system - amplification, subwoofer, maybe even DVD player and display, before I go for a better pre/pro. Unlike amplification and subwoofers, pre/pros change quickly. New models and formats come out, prices drop, and so on. I figure that with my modest income, it will be about 2 or 3 years before I get around to the pre-pro. By then, I hope there will be moderately priced offerings that do everything I want them to so that the transition will be pleasant and welcome. It seems to me that many manufacturers really listen to consumer comments, which poor in, thanks to the internet, so that in a few years, consumers like you and me may have more choices.
