Final destination

5.1 I say 5.1 and not 7.1 because my room has large openings to other rooms just where side speakers would be placed. Quality music with pretty good HT. Currently have a 12" ported sub in 85 liter box tuned to 20hz with 170W @ 8ohm sub amp including adj. gain, crossover and phase. No plans to migrate to top of line system over long haul. Just good solid components that will allow me to keep current by leapfrogging components as they improve. Expensive store bought speakers out of the question. Thinking of GR Research (A/V-3 mains with 3- A/V-1+) or BESL speakers. I KNOW I can build 'em.
Current Sony AV receiver is so low tech that I cannot even use it as a pre.
So do I wait for digital Hi-res? Do I buy a Denon or rotel, etc approx $800-$900 AV reciever now then a good power amp and then buy the hi-res processor when the prices drop? (All the while building those speakers, ha ha.)

Question is where do I start?
