dunno why they got it for me, I think they got some combo unit themselves and sort of like it (they are heavy time shifters, and didn't need DVD, but got it since otherwise, they wouldn't have gotten a stand alone DVD player.) Anyway, mine is it is the JVC model. It could record and play DVD at the same time. And you could switch between DVD or VHS output via the combo composite output, or use that for VHS and let the DVD come out via its s-video or component output. One advantage of this unit is that it offers direct duplication of non macrovision-protected DVD, as if anyone ever does this. These units seem to be short on front panel display, only having a 4 digit counter for HH:MM and relying on OSD for everything else. The only PITA I have with them is since the DVD and VHS relies on the same buttons of the remote, with the VHS or DVD button selected to let the player know which mode it should operate (note, it does not switch the remote to send different IR signal, but the player will operate different functions based on whether it is in VHS or DVD mode.) That is all fine if you use the combo video output since it will also switch to VHS or DVD. But when I use the s-video or component out, it is always in DVD mode, but it won't understand the remote if the remote has not signaled it to go into DVD mode. This also makes my learning remote complicated to use, since when I jump straight to the play DVD mode (w/o going through prelimary macro of turning everything on and setting player in DVD mode,) the play button does not necessarily start playing the DVD that is in there. Workaround solutions might be to make the "initial buttons that gets pressed" (which could be eject, play, Menu) to be a macro which includes selecting DVD mode before executing the original button's function.
