Setting volume levels for home theater

I have the Avia disk and it has some awesome reference tones. My problem is that my Marantz SR-19EX only allows volume adjustments when its voicing its own internal reference tones. That means I can't adjust the volume of the 5.1 channels in real time while the Avia tones are sounding. Rather, I have to adjust the volume to the Marantz tones. What gives? Am I doing something wrong or is that the deal for all recievers?
