Like everything else, it depends on implementation by the source and the display.Case in point, the Samsung HD931 and Bravo D1 DVD players. Samsung misunderstood the specs (used computer DVI instead of video DVI) and thus got the implementation wrong. The Bravo D1 got it right.
Done correctly, a DVI output gives you the capability to go from compressed digital YPbPr on a DVD (MPEG) to uncompressed digital RGB at the DVI output directly to the RGB processor input in the display without any analog processing, extra D/A - A/D conversions and associated cables in between.
