Home Video Asylum

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

Don't hold your breath.

It's a bit more complicated than just a modification. The digital RGB signal (what is sent out of the DVI port) is usually sourced from the decoding chip. Your Sony's don't have the right type of output from their decoder (too early a model).

The best you will probably be able to do for a digital video output is an SDI upgrade. It may not even be possible on your Sony's. The cost is about $450. The catch is that you have to have a video processor (very limited and $$$$) and/or a display (very very limited and $$$$) that will accept this type of digital signal. This may not be worth it for you.

Then there are the alternatives:

The Bravo D1 is about $200 list. Unfortunately, this player has some issues. Some units work fine, some require upgrades from the distributor (US based V Inc) and some get modified to use a different transport by their owners -- much luck using this route. A Bravo D2 is expected in January. No specs yet.

The Denon DVD5900, the current #1 DVI-HDCP capable player, is about $2000 list. Awesome machine that also plays DVD-A and SACD. The first models shipped with the DVI-HDCP output disabled, but enabled units are now shipping. A CD-ROM is available from Denon to activate the DVI-HDCP port on the initial shipments.

There is also the Momitsu V880. It is based on the same architecture as the Bravo D1, but seems to be more reliable. It's in the $250 - $300 range, but support from the one US distributor seems to be lacking when there is a problem. The manufacturer is based in Taiwan.

Do not get the Samsung HD931 ($299 list) for its DVI-HDCP output.

Other players are currently being released (the Pioneer DV-59i at $1600 list, among others) and more will be released in the very near future with a DVI-HDCP output and/or a HDMI output. You might want to wait if you are serious. Prices and features will vary, of course.

By the way, what type of display do you have?
