Does a HDTV cable box replace a HDTV reciever/tuner?

Cable company is bringing HDTV to town soon, so I may pull the trigger on a new TV. Will an HDTV-capable monitor be sufficient with the HDTV cable box, or will I need a separate HDTV reciever?
