Best audio connection and cable between DVD and Reciever?

This is my first HT setup.... and I went the very very very cheap route and got a 'box' sysetm because I have a very inexpensive TV that is only about 3 years old and a very inexpensive DVD player thats about the same and I do not have the budget to replace either. The TV is 29" only has the standard analog left, right, video and cable inputs and the DVD is not progressive scan or anything.

Anyways.... I just wanted something simple and inexpensive for now cause watching movies through TV speakers only sucks. I picked up a little Onkyo 6.1 HT system (the one without the DVD) to go along with my other inexpensive equipment. A few years down the road when I can afford it, it will all be replaced.

To my question now! My DVD has two digital outs, coax and optical as well as standard analog. The reciever has multiple digital inputs, one coax and three optical.

Which of the two (coax, optical) is the better to use? Can someone recomend a specific cable? I think the local HT shop carries monster brand.... we also have a Best Buy here and I'm not sure what they carry.

Also... does someone make a decent analog video cable?? I'm stuck using that since my TV doesnt have component or S video inputs. :(

Any other little budget tricks to get what I've got looking and sounding its best since I'll be stuck with it a few years?

Thanks all!
