Well, tell them to look into front projection. For that money, they could have a 70-100" picture. Tell the Dad to imagine watching the Giants on an 8 foot screen. A great projector, some cables, and a screen can be purchased for under $3K.With front projection, you have to worry a lot more about how much light the room gets... windows will cause problems during the day, but you can always budget in money for new curtains. If it's a basement or easily light controlled room, all the better.
If you're going to look into it at all, I'd suggest the Sanyo PLV-Z2. It's bright, is 720p HD native, and had been getting a lot of good reviews. If you go to www.avsforum.com, then go to forums -> display devices, you'll find a bunch of great info from end users. For projectors, look at the "Under $3500" section and look for any references to the Z2. To see actual screen shots, check out "Screens" and open a few posts.
Of course you can always look into a rear projection... but just remember the size of it and think how to get it into the house. Plasma is always an option, but I still think it's over-priced. Check out avsforum for them, too.
