TiVo - how does it work with cable boxes?

Have moved, and am back to cable after a couple of years with DirectTV using the Sony DirecTV/TiVo box. Good thing is that I get High Def on cable, but am really missing the TiVo.
So am thinking about getting a stand alone TiVo box. But wondering how it works with a cable box. Can TiVo control select channels off the cable box, or do I have to set the channel I wish to record (in which case, it's not much better than a vcr)?
