I'm no expert . . . but I assume you have weighed the pros & cons of LCD vs. plasma. There is a lot more info at www.avsforum.com, but under the plasma/LCD subdivision, much discussion is devoted to plasma--i.e., there are a lot of happy plasma owners.

LCD at larger sizes is just breaking into the market. In addition to the 37" Sharp, you might consider the Samsung 40" LCD TV--largest out at present. LCD is lighter and burns less energy, but critics point to the limited viewing angle (170 degrees at most) and lack of dark blacks. I'm waiting on the side lines, & I think LCDs are becoming more attractive.

Full high definition LCD 1920 X 1080 are on their way.

As for a DVD player, I habit the audio forum so I'm inclined to universal players. Denon DVD-5900--at MSRP 2,000 is a great unit, & plays all audio formats. Make sure you get DVI connection on both DVD player and video display device.
