Re: Big screen vs. projector

I wish I had your budget. If I had your size room, I'd opt for a much larger screen size but maybe it's a multi-use room. Screens would run $1 to $6k (not sure on upper end) depending on quality, need for motorized screen/ceiling flush mount and need for acoustically transparent screen to accommodate center (and/or mains?) speaker installation.

I paid roughly half what you are probably willing to spend on a Front projector (FP) ($15-16K) and opted for "Mustang"-based HD2 DLP projector. At your price range I'd be looking at least an HD2+ DLP, maybe DILA or LCOS. SXRD, 3-chip DLPs, and 1080p-capable FP are probably still more than $20K but given enough time.... (I tried to hold out but my Rear projection TV is starting to take a dive).

I am partial to High definition (HD) digital displays. This is supposed to be the wave of the future and if you got's the dough and have an interest in PQ, I'd go with HD-capable display (720p/1080i or better). Definitely better than any DVD playback I've seen.

I'm certainly not an authority. You are probably better off asking this question at the AVS
