vhs to dvd recording, help please, Newbie

Hi,
I,ve been trying to record my families collection of 8mm transfered to vhs into DVD. When I insert the blank DVD+R to prepare for recording, the "Disk Error" message appears immediately. Its a JVC DR-MV1S VCR/DVD recorder. Thanks in advance for your help.
