Analog inputs connected?

I don't have The Matrix or the Denon, but here are some suggestions.

The Matrix listings I've seen say it only has a Dolby Digital 5.1 English soundtrack for the movie. Is this correct? If it is not, make sure you are selecting the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack via the DVD's menu. If other languages are included on the disc, they may not be 5.1, but 2.0 soundtracks, so in order to get the 5.1 soundtrack you will have to select the English 5.1 track if the language you want is not a 5.1 soundtrack.

Here's another possibility. Do you have both, the analog and the digital outputs of the DVD player, connected to the Denon receiver? If it's for the same input, the analog connection may be the default and the Denon sees 2-channel for the analog input. You may be able to select the optical or coax connection as the default to get the Dolby Digital signal to the receiver or you may have to disconnect the analog connection if it's connected to the same input.
