Ocd brought up a good point... First make sure that you have selected the correct INPUT on your TV menu.

Are you running the standard old Composite Video input? This would be a single video cable that looks just like the audio cables with the RCA plugs on each end.

Are you running an S-Video cable? This single video cable would have a connector with a few small pins inside.

Are you running 3 component video cables, one Red, one Green, one Blue?

If you're running (RGB) component video it is possible that your older set might not support 480p progressive scan. Switch the DVD player to output a 480i interlaced signal.
