Newbie questions on Video Capturing and CD burning

Hi all,

I am experimenting with video capturing and editing to amuse myself. I am totally new to this and hope the more experienced forumers can advise me.

My equipment is:
CPU: Pentium 2.4Ghz with Hyperthread capability
Video: Pinnacle Edition Version 5.1 with breakout box and ATI card
Audio: Onboard

Description of problem:

1) When using Pinnacle Edition 5 to digitize Analogue VHS video, cannot capture video and sound beyond a few minutes.

connection:
VCR player (video and audio out) -> Pinnacle breakout box -> PC

2) When using Nerovision 2 to digitize Analogue VHS video with Mpeg-2 compression, I need to connect the VCR audio outputs to the PC soundcard

VCR player (video out) -> Pinnacle breakout box -> PC
VCR player (audio out) -> PC on board sound card

3) Captured MPEG-2 video from Nerovision is quite poor even in High quality setting. Further, the audio and video on the burned CD is out of sync. If I capture without compression, the picture quality is better, but there are dropped frames.

My question is, would a dedicated ADC with firewire solve the above problems?

Thanks and regards
